VOIPO Transitioners - tips on failing over to voicemail

For those of you who, like me, are dead in the water (unable to get our phones to register/work).
Be sure to get your voicemail and/or SMS configured so your customers can still reach you.

If you don’t go to the advanced tab for voicemail, they will hear a generic greeting.
It’s in DID Numbers/Voicemail - create a new Voicemail Account if you haven’t already.
(Go to Recording to upload your greeting or go to tts.voip.ms to generate one from text)
Choose your greeting in the “Unavailable Message Recording” drop-down.
(If you don’t see it, it means you haven’t uploaded it yet).

Hope this helps,

Steven

I used the time between opening an account and the porting of my number to “play” with voip.ms and have everything ready for the actual porting. tts.ms was helpful in creating messages.

I ended up getting a new Grandstream ATA instead of relying on the one used with the previous service. It was up and running before the port.

My tip for anyone who is having issues registering their ATA or phone would be to create a sub account (free) and use the cell phone app (free) to register to that account. If you are planning on being ATA only you can point your DID to the sub while you are fighting with registering the main account.

If you are planning on having multiple devices connected to the voip.ms server you MUST use sub accounts. Two devices trying to register to the main account will keep kicking the other one off. Give every direct connected device a sub account and create a Ring Group containing up to eight SIP devices.

There are posts here that helped move NOBOROBO over to voip.ms and there are a lot of features that make this a better service. Hopefully you’ll be able to work through any connection issues and enjoy the new options.

Okay… I got the Voicemail setup. Unfortunately, calls never go to Voicemail! I called with my cell phone and it rang 9 times before I hung up.

There is a configuration for how long it rings before going to voicemail. Mine was 60 seconds! I changed it to 15 seconds (about three rings).

Edit DID Settings. Look for Ring Time in Seconds. Also, make sure you have Voicemail Associated with DID configured.

Where is the setting in the configurations?

DID Numbers/Manage DIDs
Click on the Pencil edit icon under Actions
Scroll down past the server list

Thank you! So, is the CallerID Name Lookup and Record Calls necessary for Voicemail to work?

No. Not at all. Both of those cost money and are completely optional.

I get the same…voicemail isn’t picking up…and their support absolutely sucks!

Go to DID Numbers - Manage DIDs and edit your DID.

On the right hand side there is a button labeled “Failover” … click it and other options will appear to the left.

Click on Busy, Unreachable and No Answer and set each to “Voicemail” (near the bottom of the list - None is the default).

There is also a Voicemail Associated with DID and a Ring Time in Seconds setting below the point of presence choice. Hopefully you have those set to the desired mailbox and time.

I hope this helps. (I am a former VOIPO customer.)

Here’s something that tripped me up (calls kept going straight to voicemail). Turns out the SIP server I set in my ATA device was different than the one assigned to my number by VIOP.ms.

When I updated my ATA to use the same server, all was copacetic, and calls came through. I hope this helps someone…

[tried to attach screenshots, but got the nastygram: 'An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post.’] :frowning:

If it makes you feel better, you are not the first to trip over that (especially on ported numbers). Thanks for the reminder to check the server! Your accounts (and sub_accounts, if any) need to be on the same server as your DID.

My callers say all they hear is a fast busy signal. :frowning:
