I’m using Groundwire and I did a test of trying to sent a photo of my dog from one of my DIDs. I immediately got a “message error” and the message didn’t go out.
I contacted support and they told me that wasn’t supported via the SIP protocol they use.
It’s not a show-stopper for me - I have other ways of sending images - but sending images does work using the TextNow VoIP app. It doesn’t with Talkatone though. So it seems to depend on the app.
I guess using apps meant to handle that where both parties are signed up is better for that use case: Apple Messages, Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, etc.
If you want to be able to send a photo from your phone and have it look like it is coming from your VoIP.ms number, just enable email to SMS, and send it from your phone using a service such as ProtonMail or Tuta Mail. You can set up outgoing email to SMS without using the service in the reverse direction.
I was pretty sure I had tested this, but to be sure, I just emailed a short message with a photo attached to sms@voip.ms (you have to configure the service before you can use it), and I received it on my real mobile number with the photo.
I appreciate your response, but to be honest find it too complicated to follow.
I think I will just use other methods to send photos. For example, my TextNow VoIP works find for that, albeit a bit slow. Or I’ll arrange with the other party to use a mutually accessible alternative app better suited for that, like iPhone Messages, FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, LINE, or Signal.
Thanks though!
