Incoming calls and SMS

since you are talking about push notifications i am wondering if you are on IOS or Android. It seems local push may only be available on IOS

Hello @nomads,

I use Groundwire for Android with push notifications and it works well.

Kind regards.

I did send in an update to support here after getting detailed help with Groundwire including SIP logging. It seems to clearly show there is a 30+ second delay in VoIP.ms sending an SMS to Groundwire. That explains the delays I’m seeing. It can affect the ability to have a text conversation with someone. I’m waiting to hear back now.

The final reply from support is in. They acknowledged that their average SMS delivery time delay for received SMS messages is around 30-35 seconds.

This contrasts with every other VoIP service I use, such as TextNow and Talkatone where both sent and received SMS happen instantly.

While not a deal breaker for me I would not recommend VoIP.ms for your main SMS service, though the sending and receiving of voice messages is quick and works well.

It depends on your use case.

i’m also a skype refugee… ported my skype number to voip.ms without any issues. took about 6 days.

i tried for a few days to use zoiper, but it seemed not to work for SMS. SMS forwarding setting in my voip.ms account seemed to work, but i wasn’t able to reply and the chats weren’t showing up anywhere in my zoiper account.

so i bailed on zoiper and tried a bunch of other apps… and settled on groundwire. issue not is to successfully send and receive text messages. i have switched off my email forwarding feature on voip.ms and made sure ā€œsimpleā€ is enabled in my groundwire account.

still, no luck… are there other things i should check? i looked through the groundwire and acrobits wikis to make sure i’ve set everything up and i’m not seeing anything i might have missed.

would appreciate any hints. thanks.

edit: i’m running groundworks on iOS on my iphone.

Hello all,

My apologies for posting here. I’m new to this board and I have difficulties to post. I managed to post once under ā€œone offā€ (or something like that) category. Replying haphazardly seems to be the last resort. BTW, I’m not versed at all in communication software.

Help with Zopier!

I cannot receive any calls. Outbound calls are ok. Texting works but delayed (hence I emailed the texts to myself). Can I install zoiper on 2 phones? And how can I solve the inbound issue? I opened 2 tickets and nothing. Thanks kindly!

Hello @zoiper_user,

Is it working when the application is open? (I ask, because you might just have problem with non persistent connections, hence the calls cannot come in. Push notification is what you need in that case.)

  • Make sure in your voip.ms account that you have a good connection.
  • Use TLS secured connection over TCP (as a roaming phone will never be able to get calls properly. The phone needs to keep the connection to the server, and this is the most easy way. So use TLS. Look at the wiki for that.

https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Call_Encryption_-_TLS/SRTP

(Look at the wiki for your good Zoiper version and see specific instructions for it.)

Even with that, you might miss calls because the phone goes into battery saving mode, etc. So Push Notification is required. With Zoiper you have to pay every month for that.

:backhand_index_pointing_right:You may instead try the free voip.ms softphone application.

You can also buy Groundwire (quite cheap, same application, full featured). See my experience here:

Kind regards!

I ran into the same thing and found that using sms api made it way easier to manage incoming texts.

Thanks you for your detailed reply!! I know… delayed reply..

wonder any updates on this. Thanks.

I opened a ticket and received a response. They are aware of this delay when using SMS via SIP with the voip.ms app via Android and iOS. A delay (up to 45 seconds) may be experienced. The support sent this feedback to the development team so they may analyze if something can be done to reduce the time in the future.

I’m currently using Google Voice and this 40-second incoming SMS delay is the only reason I haven’t switched to voip.ms.

I downloaded VoIP.ms’s softphone on iOS. Put in my sub account name, pw, and server info and it is registered properly. I can make outgoing and incoming calls. No problem. I enabled the ā€œSIMPLEā€ toggle in Advanced Settings and I can send SMS. However, I cannot receive SMS on the app. I know there are replies to what I sent because I can read them on the VoIP.MS web portal’s SMS/MMS centre. What am I missing?

I cannot receive SMS on both Android and iOS softphones. I could a few weeks although with about 30 seconds delay. I opened a ticket and chatted with William on Sunday. He said he will forward the ticket to the department in charge of SMS features. I am waiting for their responses.
