Grandstream WP826 registration failed for a few sec

Hi, I got a new Grandstream WP826, and I notice that it frequently fails to re-register for approximately 2 to 5 seconds, then successfully re-registers. Unfortunately this wakes up the phone, it makes a ping sound and turns the screen on which wastes battery. This happens fairly often, maybe a couple times an hour with a re-reg time of 10 minutes.

I’m guessing I have some settings not set properly? I have encryption turned on, so to my understanding SIP traffic goes over TCP, so why would it have a (brief) problem re-registering in that case? Shouldn’t the connection already be open?

I followed the guide at https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Grandstream_WP810,_WP820,_WP822_and_WP825 as best I could with the newer device. Ended up setting re-registration to a lower timeout (10 min instead of 3) because there is a TCP keepalive. So I’m not worried about the connection being closed by firewall.

I haven’t figured out logging on this phone yet but I suppose that’s the next step … it supports sending syslog to another device, as well as logging to its own memory. Amazing times we live in that a $70 handset does this.

Did increasing the re-registration time fix that problem, are just lessen the number of occurrences? I had exactly the same problem (only with T33G phones). All phones did the same thing, like you described. VOIP.ms worked with me for a while, until they got tired of me. Lots of logs, lots of things tried, but never solved it. Sometimes it would go a day or two okay, then do it five times in the next hour.

They finally gave up and suggested that it probably wouldn’t happen during a conversation. I had to switch our company to Vonage. Liked VOIP.ms better, but couldn’t stand the interruptions in service.

I’m not sure if my issue is the same. My WP826 works for a few minutes receiving calls and eventually I cannot receive calls any longer. The phone works well to make phone calls without issues.

I think this is some sort of keep-alive issue when using NAT, I have UPnP enabled, I tried keep-alive as well and I can’t figure out the right configuration. I’m replying to your message because I cannot create a new topic and maybe you have experienced this issue as well and have reocmmendations for settings?

Hello @ezequiel,

For new topics (and new users), see:

For your point now, the very first thing I always suggest to people with similar issues is to use the TLS connection along with SRTP (both must be configured at once) as all traffic will go through one simple crypted TCP connection and will most probably solve your problems. Save yourself a lot of trouble and go that route.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Be careful as you setup, every single detail is important for it to work. (Especially SRTP settings, often overlooked.) Check if you find instructions for you specific device.

You will need to adapt the instructions to your device (if it supports TLS and SRTP). A bit complex to setup, but it is worth it, as it solves most problems linked with network related issues.

Kind regards!
