Yes, I still use it and it is my favorite. Old, yet somehow the alternatives don’t match its features.
I like how it handles multiple accounts, encryption, automatic call recording, and shows the registration status of each account on the lock screen.
My only, yet significant, concern is that it is really old and unmaintained.
One issue I’m having is that I’m not being able to use ca.voip.ms with CSIPSimple. It fails to register with the new clustered server, but registration succeeds if I switch back to one of the individual POPs. I’m not sure what the issue is, but I’d really like to figure this out, since automatically handling POP failover is the #1 missing feature from voip.ms since over a decade!
Linphone, baresip, CSipSimple all work more or less fine. Most softphones support multiple SIP accounts.
Regarding push notifications, which is a useful feature for battery savings, there is a glaring privacy/security issue in trusting the push server with the traffic. For this reason, I avoid push notifications. Admittedly it is a great convenience otherwise.
Thanks. Since I posted, I came across baresip and tried it. Generally, I like it, except that it only works on my phone at one volume: whether I use the earpiece in the phone or the speaker, it does not respond to the up/down volume buttons. (I’m running Android 14 on a Samsung A72).
Guess I’ll stick with Linphone and Sipnetic for now.
BTW is anyone able to have successful calls with any softphone while driving? Haven’t with either Linphone or Sipnetic.
Well @Telefonista, I can say that I had many successful calls on the road with Groundwire, on roaming data. It just works. In rare cases it did not work (probably due to network issues, and wifi mixup when you are near places where they offer wifi).
Usually incoming calls with push notification also work. But this is hard to tell why in some cases it does not, as data reception on 3G, 4G, LTE is not always good depending on where you are at one moment.
I am overall quite happy with my actual experience. This is why I recommend it since @BTech suggested it to me. This was, after the fact, a no-brainer buy.
I spent so much time on free stuff that just does not work well as I wanted or needed. This one works. From my experience so far, worth every penny.
after trying everything that’s out there, free / paid / subscription, i’ve also settled on using the web-based voip sms. it shows all conversations, it shows contacts, it shows the history regardless of which device i’m using.
i can’t imagine that it’d be too tough to port this to an app (i know there’s an android version but all my devices are ios or mac), but i’m not a coder so i don’t know the nuts-and-bolts of it.
i can send text messages from my non-US mobile number, but obviously i can’t send outbound message to non-US numbers, or at least it seems that way unless i have something configured incorrectly.
i’m using groundwire for calls, but the sms functionality isn’t where it needs to be imo. but i don’t need calling as much as i need sms, especially for bank verfication codes, etc.
