Your experience on softphones—which one to chose?

Is there a limit to the number of SIP accounts you can have on a softphone with the free version of Sipnetic? Works well with two accounts, but I’d like to increase to four if I can.

I’m new to VoIP.ms and have been using Groundwire. It seems perfectly fine, and worth the small cost. I’ve been using it with two DIDs and have tested incoming and outgoing calls and also SMS with both numbers. I get my voicemail delivered by email and haven’t tried the feature mentioned to retrieve voicemail with an icon. I’ll look for that.

I believe you can also just long press the 1 button when you want to check voicemail in the Groundwire app.

If I try that I see this:

Voicemail number not configured.

Obviously I still have some stuff to learn.

You need to go into the the Advanced Settings for the Account and find the Voicemail Number parameter.

Set that to *97

And then see if it works.

That’s all that should need to be done in the app, but you do also need to have a voicemail box set up for the subaccount in VoIP.ms that you are using in Groundwire.

Exactly, *97 in the advanced settings of the account.

Take your time to go through the voip.ms wiki to have everything setup as you wish. There are many other options in the application you can take time to look at. But the essentials for things to work are in the wiki.

Kind regards.

Hi @aleclerc,

I set *97 there just now. And when I long press 1 I get a voice saying “something? mail - mailbox”.

I can’t understand the first word.

Then it just pauses and waits. Do I need to do something after that?

I am getting voicemails. They are arriving as email attachments, which is fine since there is no visual voicemail anyway.

Does this *97 cost anything to check voicemails?

@BTech - Does the fact I’m receiving voicemails by email attachment mean I already have a voicemail box in VoIP.ms, or is that something different?

Thanks/

I think it’s “Comedian Mail”, although I’m not really sure. Assuming this is the one I am thinking of.

Make sure you have your “Internal extension voicemail” set (they might have renamed it, that was a few years ago when I wrote my notes, it should be at the very bottom of the subaccount dialog for that device).

Sort of lost. I do have a voicemail box set, with a password, and voicemail itself its working, and I get the voicemails as attachments by email.

If I long-press one I go to what I guess is the voicemail box. I also heard a message about entering a password. If I type the 4 digit password I set I just get a wrong password message.

Not sure how important this is since I get the voicemail messages by email, but it would be nice to understand. Thanks.

Hello @douglerner,

*97 will dial to the mailbox assigned to the extension.

When you setup your voicemail, there are several options.

  • You may forward it by email and keep a copy in your mail box, or select Yes for “Delete Voicemail Message”.
    • If you selected Yes, your voicemail will always be empty and there is no need to go check.
    • Otherwise you must go once in a while to clean the place.
  • For the password, you may select Yes to “Skip Password Prompt”. Doing so will skip the password if you connect to the voicemail through the extension it is assigned to.

If a sub account is not set with a voicemail then you hear the message prompt “Comedian Mail” as @theDaveCA said.

  • Then you must first type the voicemail number you want to reach, and after the password.
  • To fix this issue and go straight to the desired voicemail for this extension:
    • Go to Manage Sub Accounts
    • Select your sub account
    • At the very bottom of the configuration page, select the “Internal Extension VoiceMail” you want to use by default for this sub account.

You should be good to go.

Kind regards,
Alexandre

Hello @aleclerc,

In my case, I did not select “Delete voicemail message.”

It appears that I do have “Skip password prompt” selected. But after a pause I am prompted for it.

I do receive voicemail, and it properly arrives in an email attachment. But I do get that “Comedian Mail” prompt that was mentioned.

I just tried again and after hearing “Comedian Mail” I entered the phone number. Then I was prompted for the password and I entered the set password. But it replied “password incorrect.”

I’m not really clear what needs to be done at this point. Are the voicemails I am receiving as email attachments accumulating in the mailbox?

Hello @douglerner,

You have to enter the “voicemail number,” not the phone number. This should work well.

Again, make sure your sub account has the desired voicemail set.

I hope this will all work fine (or better) for you.

Best regards!

Still looking for Android softphone the supports multiple SIP accounts
I would prefer open-source, but I’m willing to drop that requirement.
I generally like Sipnetic, but is doesn’t support my car’s audio system, and when I receive a call, I have to enter password (or have phone recognize fingerprint) before I can answer.
Linphone supports car audio and doesn’t require password/fingerprint to answer calls. But on some calls the other party can’t hear me—that was very frustrating after I had waited 20 min to talk to my bank; had to call back and wait again.
Groundwire sounds good. I don’t mind paying, but I refuse to sign into a Google account from my phone (due to privacy concerns). Any other way to pay them besides a Google account?
Any other suggestions?

What about Bria Solo?

Does Bria work better than the free softphones? Can you make high-quality calls when driving? I haven’t been able to do that with Linphone or Sipnetic.

i am a skype user looking for a simple alternative. Reading through these posts , I will get acrobits but dont know whether softphone or groundwire is the right choice. The difference in price for IOS is not significant. But I would like SMS capability to send and receive. Can I get this with softphone?

Hello @jwfrank,

I was not sure I wanted all the features, but I at least wanted call transfer and potentially SMS. I reasoned myself to not trying to save a few dollars ($3 for Android) and just got Groundwire.

I am not using SMS as on Android there is the “Voip.ms SMS application,” but I have call transfer which I used at least once I think. Just happy it is there. No regrets anyway, this application just works well.

Kind regards!

I thank you so much for fast reply. I don’t mind spending the extra 3$ or euros. But I am wondering if the set up and operation on the more expensive one is worth (for me) the added unneeded benefits

Msybe I should just ask to all who might read this: is set up and daily use/operstion of ground wire that much more difficult???

Hello @jwfrank,

If you do not need the extra features, then do not buy it. Only you can know.

As for the setup, look and feel, despite the fact that they look different on the screenshots, they are exactly identical applications. The only difference are the extra features being available or not.

If you want SMS, you must buy Groundwire.

I hope this helps and have a nice day,
Alexandre

PS. FOMO’s price is $3. :joy::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

PPS. You may contact Acrobits to know if SMS is in the basic edition, but I do not think since SMS really stands for “Short Message Service”.

Thanks very much. Helps a lot. I wanted to contact Acrobits but did not find a “contact us” link on website. Based on what you write I will pay the extra $3,to ensure sms capability Many thanks for finding the time to answer
