I have a Grandstream HT802 given to me when Voipo went belly up. I was able to get it to work with Voip.ms and it is working fine. It has old software on it and I was wondering if I should upgrade the software. As I said, right now the HT802 is working fine and I don’t want to upgrade the software and have it start acting up if not needed.
I have been using HT802’s with voip.ms since 2019 and have continuously kept them on the latest firmware. I would be very uncomfortable running old software on them. But I’m a retired IT networking guy and it’s kind of built into my DNA to be cautious.
While I am usually a believer in “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, this piece of general wisdom shouldn’t be applied to anything that touches the Internet. Principles of good security hygiene strongly suggest that you should always keep your networking gear up-to-date with the latest firmware. Even better, be caught up with the latest protocols and crypto protocols even if that means upgrading the hardware to get it.
BTW, the HT812 v2 is a really pleasant upgrade from the HT802, if you can swing it. I recently upgraded from two HT802’s to a single HT814 v2 and am super happy with the improvements in performance and the UI. Works perfectly with voip.ms – all channels on SIP/TLS – and I’ve had no issues.
There have been a lot of security patches and bug fixes since the old Voipo‑issued firmware, depending on how old your version is. It might be worth checking your current firmware number against the release notes for the latest version on Grandstream’s site. That will give you a clear picture of what’s changed and help you decide whether an upgrade makes sense for your setup, especially if you see fixes or security updates that apply to the issues you care about.
TY for that reply. I believe my device is running the 1.0.41.2 software but if that is the case then I don’t see a firmware update for it unless the 1.0.35.4 is newer than mine. I may not be looking in the correct place on my device for the firmware version I have. I’ll attach a screenshot of my interface so you can tell me if I am correct on that.
1.0.63.3 is the newest version.
Thank you…..I finally got up enough nerve to update my HT802 device to the 1.0.63.3 version. It went well with no adverse effects on my service with Voip.ms. Whew!!!
