Codec recommendations and G722

Hello @peterbecich,

Unfortunately no. The only thing we can do it send a suggestion. Then you know nothing else. So I would recommend that you do the same. It will increase the count for that one.

Kind regards!

Sorry, I haven’t checked yet if the technicians at VoIP.ms have made any changes in response to our suggestions. The codecs not being ordered hierarchically is not an issue for me personally, since with those among the VoIP providers I use that offer HD audio, I only permit G.722 (first choice) and Opus (second choice) as options in my phone software (Microsip, etc.) and desktop (non-portable) phones (Grandstream, etc.). Haven’t experienced any quality issues that might be related to transcoding between G.722 and G.711 (like when calling people who have old-fashioned landline phones).

In any case, my approach needs to be considered in context: my cell phones are dumb phones and don’t have the option to connect to VoIP.ms (or Skype, etc., for that matter), so I use softphones on computers or desktop phones for VoIP. On the other hand, people who want to use VoIP via a softphone app on their smartphone but encounter difficulties related to weak signals or bandwidth issues, are likely better served selecting G.729 instead of G.722, for example.

I have a new GrandStream phone with voip.ms. G.722 and the older G7.11 and G729 are enabled on both the phone, and in voip.ms. I have only 1 sub-account.

Calling a cell phone works great. The cell phone shows the call is “HD” indicating there has been a G.722 handshake. I believe the concerns about codec ordering or downgrade to the older codec may have been resolved.
