Sending SMS from email - Anyone Else Need More Flexibility?

Wondering if anyone else has the same challenge with the newish VoIP.ms service to send SMS from an email? Perhaps if VoIP.ms sees a number of customers with this same problem they will prioritize improving this useful service.

Right now to send an SMS from an email you need to send an email to sms@voip.ms with the subject set to the destination DID.

Unfortunately much of the equipment I have that can send an email when it needs to report an error or failure cannot set the subject line of the email - since the subject line contains the nature of the error or failure.

Some carriers, Bell Canada, Virgin Mobile allows SMS to be sent by sending to @vmobile.ca or @txt.bell.ca

Would other people like VoIP.ms to implement the ability to send an SMS by emailing @sms.voip.ms?

Generally what I have seen from carriers is the ability to RECEIVE text messages by having the sender use a number@carrier address. One would need to know the carrier of the receiving party and address the text to the correct carrier.

In recent years such open email to text gateways have become unreliable. In the US I have seen emails to Verizon subscribers delayed by multiple hours (to the point where I include the time originated in the message to warn recipients of the delay). Earlier this year in the US, AT&T shut down their open email to text gateway completely noting the level of spam received was too high.

Sending a text message from those carriers would need to be done from the subscribed device or a third party spoofing the sending number.

The voip.ms method of using sms@voip.ms and filtering messages by sending email seems to be a good spam prevention. There are several other ways of originating messages including SMPP, which is more secure than email and requires a username and password.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but since the topic is “making sending SMS via Email more flexible,” I’d like to raise another point.

as a reseller, I’m facing two challenges when trying to persuade my customers to sign up email to SMS srevice:

  1. No option for sending to multiple recipients in one email (group texting).

  2. Inability to disable or customize the email notifications when sending SMS via email.
Currently, the notification looks like this:
Dear Customer, Your SMS message is being sent to xxxxxxxxxx. You can review the details of your SMS messages via the customer portal under the “DID Numbers” tab and clicking on “SMS/MMS Message Center.” If you have any questions, please open a ticket from within your customer portal, or alternatively by sending an email to support@voip.ms. Sincerely, VoIP.ms Support.

I’ve already submitted these as feature requests, but I hope mentioning them here will help gain more traction.

As a reseller, I want my clients to be able to use their business email accounts to send SMS messages to their customers, making it appear as though the messages are coming from their main business phone numbers, because it helps avoid emails being flagged as junk, I believe this would be an appealing feature if we can make it MORE FLEXIBLE.
