Difference between Device Type configuration (PBX or IP Phone)

Hello,

In the configuration of voip.ms accounts and subaccounts, there is a Device Type option that can be configured to either PBX / Softswitch or IP Phone. In technical terms, how does this affect the behavior on the voip.ms side?

Thanks!

Hello @cinergi,

My guess would be:

  • That selecting PBX, voip.ms will consider the device like a “trunk” with more specific calls and behaviours for supporting multiple simultaneous calls, fine-tuned keep alive for servers, etc. It is the responsibility of the other “PBX” to route the calls properly, manage the extensions, features, etc.
  • In “device” mode, voip.ms will deal directly with the device as an endpoint and so SIP protocol header would be accordingly, feature management from voip.ms, maybe more aggressive keep alive, etc.

Unfortunately, this is hard to find technical details in this regard. Maybe ask the question to the tech support team if you encounter an issue and feel this might be related.

But bottom line, if your “device” is an endpoint, it should be a “phone,” if this is more like a “trunk,” it should be “PBX, gateway, switch” for it to handle multiple calls, extensions, features, etc.

Kind regards!
