Example the number

450-555-1234 is not valid because of the dashes

Even though nearly all number you would copy and paste have dashes in them

The application should be tolerant of that ! Just ignore dashes and extra spaces before and after the number

The same should also apply within the dashboard. Any number field should accept common formatting and simply normalize it in the background.
